Currently they are text documents, but once I have more feedback I think I will make final versions with Illustrator. I received some feedback from them (for instance everyone agreed that the unit prices chart should be included on their cheat sheet as well as the outlines of their ships), identified numerous typos, and want to update these to make them better. The first turn took less than 20 minutes, and on the second turn all 3 new players were actually making choices with confidence.
These worked really well with the first group I tried.
Since I could not find any existing cheat sheets ones online (please point me to some if they already exist), I made my own. The goal would be to allow each nation to experience as many of the games mechanics as possible (buying works like this, combat moves work like this, non-combat is like this, placing units is like this), set them up for success, and also keep the game open so that by the second turn they are able to make their own choices and actually play a game. Recently I had the idea of using cheat sheets that contain useful information, and essentially script the first turn (this was inspired by the game wingspan, which uses a scripted first turn to teach new players the mechanics and set everyone up to have a fun first game). As much as I love it, Axis and Allies is an intimidating game on the first turn for even experienced boardgamers, and after an hour of explaining the rules a single first round of 1940 Europe (let alone 1940 world) can take another two hours as each player struggles with indecision over numerous options of what to buy and what to do. I am trying to set them up to have an exciting first game, to help them understand all the rules, and to ensure they will want to come back to play again. This means that when I play A&A it is typically with 3-5 new players who are just learning the game.
To explain, I move around a lot and as a result I frequently have to establish a new board game group. I am trying to develop a set of cheat sheets for new players that essentially script their first turn to allow them to see and experience how the game works.
